    Kubernetes 1.24 'Stargazer' ships without dockershim

    The 1.24 release completed the transition announced in 2020 by removing dockershim from the kubelet, ending Kubernetes' special-case coupling to Docker. Container runtimes now plugged in purely through the CRI standard - the symbolic end of the Docker era inside Kubernetes.

    On June 6, 2014, Joe Beda pushed 'First commit' to the kubernetes repository - about 250 files and roughly 47,500 lines of Go, Bash, and Markdown. Built by Beda, Brendan Burns, and Craig McLuckie as an open-source reimagining of Borg, this commit is the project's official birthday.

    At PyCon US 2013, dotCloud founder Solomon Hykes gave 'The Future of Linux Containers' - the first public demo of Docker, open sourced the same month. It made Linux containers usable by ordinary developers and set off the container revolution that made an orchestrator like Kubernetes necessary.

    Prehistory: Borg, Google's secret cluster manager

    From the early 2000s Google ran virtually everything - Search, Gmail, MapReduce - in containers on an internal cluster manager called Borg, later refined by a system called Omega. The design stayed secret for over a decade, until Google published 'Large-scale Cluster Management at Google with Borg' at EuroSys 2015. Borg's ideas - declarative jobs, bin-packing scheduling, labels, services - are the direct DNA of Kubernetes.
