Overview
Establishing a strong brand identity is foundational for any startup. It goes beyond just a logo; it encompasses your company's personality, values, and how it's perceived by customers, investors, and employees. This section guides you through the crucial initial steps of defining your startup's core identity.
1. Name Selection
Choosing a memorable, relevant, and legally available name is critical.
Process:

- Uniqueness: Does it stand out from competitors?
- Simplicity: Shorter names are often better.
- Future-proofing: Does it allow for future growth or pivot?
- Availability Check (India Specific):
- MCA Portal: Check the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) website for existing company names. Your proposed name should not be identical or too similar to an already registered company.
- Trademark Search: Conduct a search on the Intellectual Property India website (ipindia.nic.in) to ensure the name (and potential logo) is not trademarked in your relevant classes.
- Domain Availability: Check if the
.comand.indomain names are available. - Social Media Handles: Verify availability across key platforms (LinkedIn, X, Instagram, Facebook, etc.).
Documents Required:
- None at this stage, but keep records of your search results.
Estimated Costs:
- Trademark search (self-done): Free.
- Professional trademark search/application: ₹5,000 - ₹15,000 (approx., for attorney fees).
- Domain registration: ₹500 - ₹1,500/year (approx.).
2. Mission Statement
Your mission statement defines your company's fundamental purpose. What problem are you solving? For whom? And how?
Process:
- Identify Core Purpose: What is the ultimate reason your startup exists?
- Define Target Audience: Who are you serving?
- Articulate Key Activities: What do you do?
- State Desired Impact: What outcome do you aim to achieve?

- For a Deep Tech startup: "To develop cutting-edge AI solutions that empower businesses to optimize complex operations, driving efficiency and innovation across industries."
3. Vision Statement
Your vision statement describes the future you want to create. It's an aspirational, long-term goal.
Process:
- Envision the Future: What does the world look like if your mission is fully realized?
- Be Ambitious: Think big and inspiring.
- Keep it Concise: Easy to understand and communicate.
Example:
- For a Food Tech startup: "A world where fresh, diverse, and locally sourced food is accessible to everyone, everywhere."
- For a Deep Tech startup: "To be the global leader in transformative AI technologies, shaping a future where technology serves humanity's greatest challenges."
